Abstract expressionism is not about reproducing reality as it appears—it is about translating energy, movement, and emotion as they are felt.
The Confluences series emerges from my lifelong fascination with elemental boundaries: where maritime currents collide, storms gather, tides shift, and coastal light fractures across restless water. Each painting seeks to transform these fleeting encounters into a visual language of rhythm, tension, colour, and movement.
The Layering Process
Creating the dynamic surfaces of Confluences is an intensely physical, multi-stage process:
1. The Ground
Sweeping washes of deep indigo, ultramarine, and atmospheric tones establish the spatial depth and emotional foundation of each composition.
2. The Textural Foundation
Heavy-body acrylics and layered mediums are built up with broad tools, creating rugged surfaces that suggest the raw force and unpredictable rhythm of moving tides.
3. The Expressionist Surge
Oil layers are then introduced with palette knives, building luminous contrasts, metallic accents, and energetic marks that evoke light breaking across agitated water.
The painting evolves through accumulation—layer upon layer—until the surface begins to suggest its own movement.
Bringing the Sea Indoors
The Confluences series is an invitation to experience the sea not simply as a landscape, but as energy translated into colour and form.
Whether experienced through an original framed canvas or a high-resolution art print, these works bring a sense of dynamic rhythm, elemental power, and contemplative depth into contemporary living and working spaces.
