Satyajit Roy
Satyajit Roy’s creative journey is deeply rooted in the vast horizons of the maritime world and the disciplined precision of a life spent in naval aviation. For over four decades, the interplay of light on the ocean, the structural beauty of military heritage, and the raw power of nature have formed the backdrop of his painting practice. This long-standing romance with the sea and the formative experiences of a veteran influence a body of work that seeks to bridge the gap between the physical and the metaphysical. Now living and working in Kolkata, these memories are interwoven with contemporary reflections on security, technology, and the enduring spirit of the natural world. Whether capturing the intensity of a storm or the stillness of a coastal confluence, each artwork renders complex moods into a distinct visual language.
In his recent bodies of work, such as the Confluences and Tiger Tiger Burning Bright series, bold tones form narratives of rushing tides, colossal coastlines, and the untamed energy of the wild. These abstract compositions and expressionist gestures capture the coalescence of color and light, using layered acrylics and oils to reveal a sense of both meditation and movement. Shifting between quiet, introspective moments and powerful, contrasting elements, his palette often features deep maritime blues, earthy ochres, and vivid teals, recreating the feeling of standing at the edge of the world.
